LCDR Robert L. Miller

Robert L. Miller was born May 10, 1928in Shamokin, PA. LtCdr Miller graduated from the United States Naval Academy in June 1951. His first tour of duty was with the destroyer USS Wiltsie (DD-716) where he served through 1953. In January 1954, he reported to Submarine School at New London, Connecticut.
Following graduation, he served for two years aboard the USS Trumpetfish (SS-425), and then was ordered to the commissioning crew of the USS Darter (SS-576) where he served as Torpedo Officer and Engineer Officer. On shore duty from 1958-1960, he joined the Special Projects Staff of Admiral W. F. Raborn, USN, which developed the Polaris Weapons Systems. It was during this shore duty tour he met and married Marilyn Kramersmeier of Ledyard, IA. In 1961, he was a member of the commissioning crew of the Polaris Submarine USS John Marshall (SSBN -611), serving as Navigator throughout two Polaris Patrols. LCDR Miller assumed command of the USS Bang (SS-385) in May 1964, a unit of Submarine Division 101 and Submarine Squadron TEN with homeport at New London, Connecticut.
Subsequent to his time on Bang LtCdr Miller attained the rank of Commander and retired from the navy in 1973. CDR Miller embarked on eternal patrol from Newville, PA on September 16, 2023 at the age of 95.
